BRIC Foundation and Studio Smokescreen have teamed up to create a course designed to expand your artistic competencies and expertise in Character Design and Posing. In this course, you will learn about the role of a Character Designer within an animation production, how to break down a project script into a design list, and effective character design using gesture, form, anatomy, and acting.
This course can help you strengthen your art portfolio with essential industry skills and technical proficiencies needed to apply for entry-level jobs or BRIC's Apprenticeship program.

Audience:
This is a beginner course designed for any rising artist or student who is interested in learning about Character Design and strengthening their artistic portfolio.
Prerequisites:
No prior Character Design experience necessary. Students should be comfortable with basic drawing skills and familiar with form language and anatomy.
Format:
Online, self-paced instruction with recordings and related coursework.

About Studio Smokescreen:
Studio Smokescreen is an independent, Black-owned animation studio dedicated to leading significant changes in diversity and inclusion across the animation industry. Smokescreen provides a training ground for diverse individuals to gain experience through hands-on contributions to a variety of independent and commercial projects along with opportunities to hone their craft.
This course was designed in partnership with Kris Wimberly, Studio Smokescreen Co-Founder and Head of Creative. Kris is a classically trained director and storyboard artist who currently serves as director on Disney’s hit animated series, “Firebuds,” and supervising director on Disney’s upcoming “Sofia the First: Royal Magic,” a sequel to the Emmy® and Humanitas Award-winning “Sofia the First.”
Kris’ additional credits include HBO Max’s “Close Enough,” Disney’s “Elena of Avalor,” Universal’s “Curious George 4: Royal Monkey,” Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants” and Cartoon Network’s “Teen Titans Go!” He specializes in comedy and action-comedy and has worked on animated productions of nearly every type – from 2D, CG and Flash Animation to script-driven and storyboard-driven, and across preschool, kids and primetime television series, as well as feature films.
