Indie Animation with Double Smooth

Andre Rodriguez Sr.
Writer/Director

Dre is an artist at his core possessing resilience, dedication and a lifelong passion for storytelling. His artistic journey began at 2 years old when his brother placed a pencil in his hand. Even in grade school, Dre found comfort and joy in crafting his own stories, favoring tales where characters must sacrifice something precious for growth and realization. Later in life, unexpectedly, he discovered the world of computer graphics and animation while serving time at Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, CA. Choosing to use his time, not do his time; Dre dedicated himself to studying mechanical drafting and 3D animation, emerging from incarceration with a new drive to pursue his passion. Dre rose through the ranks of animation, starting as a clerk in the facilities department at PDI/DreamWorks. After years of hard work and immersing himself in every aspect of the animation pipeline, Dre secured his dream position as a sets technical director. His talent and expertise kicked off a journey that would take him to Blue Sky Studios, Pixar Animation Studios and LAIKA Studios. With over 15 years of experience as a technical director in feature animation, Dre has left an indelible mark on beloved franchises such as "How To Train Your Dragon," "Shrek," "Madagascar," "Peanuts," "Spies in Disguise," and more recently, Oscar nominated "Elemental" and "Nimona." His debut short, “Double Smooth”, explores themes of resilience and humanity in the face of oppression.
